How to find the right iPhone screen size to design for

  1. Step 1

Filter the chart to the iPhones your app supports, for example by year range or by cutout type.

  2. Step 2

Open the display classes table to see which unique point resolutions those phones share.

  3. Step 3

Pick the most common current class (393 x 852 or 402 x 874 points) as your primary design frame.

  4. Step 4

Compare the smallest and largest supported devices at true scale and check your layout on both.

  5. Step 5

Copy the media query or SwiftUI preview name for each target device and test against its safe areas.

iPhone screen size FAQ

What are the iPhone screen sizes in points?

Current iPhones use 402 x 874 points (iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 16 Pro), 440 x 956 points (17 Pro Max, 16 Pro Max), 420 x 912 points (iPhone Air), 393 x 852 points (iPhone 16, 15, 14 Pro), 430 x 932 points (16 Plus, 15 Plus), and 390 x 844 points (iPhone 16e, 14, 13). Older phones go down to 375 x 667 (SE) and 320 x 480 (original iPhone).

What is the iPhone 17 screen size?

The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch OLED display at 1206 x 2622 pixels, 460 PPI, which is 402 x 874 points at @3x, the same display class as the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is 6.9 inches (440 x 956 points) and the iPhone Air is 6.5 inches (420 x 912 points).

Which iPhones have a 6.7-inch screen?

The 6.7-inch iPhones are the iPhone 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro Max, and 14 Plus (428 x 926 points) and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, 15 Plus, 15 Pro Max, and 16 Plus (430 x 932 points). From 2024 the Pro Max moved to 6.9 inches.

What is the difference between points and pixels on iPhone?

Points are the logical units iOS layouts use; pixels are the physical dots on the panel. Pixels equal points times the scale factor (@2x or @3x), so a 393-point-wide @3x screen is 1179 pixels wide. Design in points so layouts look the same size on every iPhone.

What screen size should I design my app for?

Design at 393 x 852 points (iPhone 16, 15, 14 Pro) or 402 x 874 points (iPhone 17, 17 Pro) as the base, then check the smallest supported phone (375 x 667, iPhone SE) and the largest (440 x 956, Pro Max). Use Auto Layout or flexible SwiftUI stacks and respect safe areas instead of hard-coding sizes.
