Apple accepts screenshots only at the exact sizes listed for each display class, in portrait or landscape (width and height swapped). Apple lists several sizes per class and does not tie each size to one device, so pick any size in the row. Older 4 inch, 3.5 inch, and 9.7 inch rows are omitted.

Apple requires at least one set for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display), at 1206 x 2622 or 1179 x 2556 pixels in portrait. The large display class accepts 1320 x 2868, 1290 x 2796, or 1260 x 2736. If your app runs on iPad, you also need an iPad 13 inch set at 2064 x 2752 or 2048 x 2732.
App Store Connect takes 1 to 10 screenshots per device size. Google Play needs at least 2 screenshots to publish and accepts up to 8 per device type. Google recommends at least 4 at 1080 px or more to be eligible for promotion.
Only if your app runs on iPad. In that case Apple requires at least one iPad 13 inch screenshot. iPhone-only apps can skip iPad sizes.
Each side must be 320 to 3840 px and the long side can be at most twice the short side. For promotion eligibility use 9:16 portrait at 1080 x 1920 or larger, or 16:9 landscape at 1920 x 1080 or larger. The feature graphic is a separate 1024 x 500 image.
Usually because the file has an alpha channel. Apple does not accept screenshots with transparency, and browsers save canvas PNGs with alpha by default. This tool writes 24-bit PNGs without an alpha channel, so the files upload cleanly. A wrong pixel size is the other common cause.
